GoLove vs Character AI: one opens, one asks first
Opened in a clean browser on 26 October 2026, character.ai showed a register-or-login screen as the homepage. Nothing was browsable first.

What we saw
We opened character.ai in a browser with no account and no stored session. The page that loaded was a sign-up screen — continue with Google, continue with Apple, or continue with email — over the line that you get access to more than ten million characters and that registering takes ten seconds.
There is no catalogue to browse first, no sample conversation, no pricing. The product begins after the account does.
A consent dialogue also appeared, stating that personal data may be processed and shared with 219 partners. That number is from their own consent interface and is worth knowing before you decide the ten seconds are free.
GoLove, in the same test
The same test on GoLove produces the opposite result. Following an entry link lands inside the application — the explore view, with a session already created — and no form appears at any point before that.
Practically, that means you can read how it writes before deciding whether to exist in anyone's database. The account question comes later, usually at the point where media is unlocked.
| GoLove | Character AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage without an account | Lands inside the app | Registration screen |
| Browse before registering | Yes | No |
| Sample the chat before registering | Yes | No |
| Public pricing | Not published | Not published |
| Adult content | Yes, 18+ | Not its positioning |
Why the wall is not just an annoyance
A signup wall moves the cost of evaluation onto you before you have any evidence that the product is worth it. You hand over an identifier, accept a privacy policy, and only then find out whether the writing is any good.
It also makes comparison shopping impractical. Checking five apps means five accounts, five inbox entries and five consent decisions — which is precisely why most people check one and buy it.
None of this means Character AI is a bad product. It is the biggest in the category for a reason, and ten million characters is a real catalogue. It does mean you cannot assess it the way you can assess an open one.
Different products anyway
Worth saying plainly: these two are not substitutes. Character AI's public positioning is general character chat, not adult content. GoLove is explicitly 18+ with image generation, video and a series section alongside the chat.
If what you want is uncensored adult companionship, Character AI is not competing for that and comparing them on it would be unfair to both. If what you want is a large catalogue of user-made characters for general roleplay, GoLove is not that either.
